ART: Hajime Sorayama (空山基) - Objets de Fétichisme

Hajime Sorayama (空山基) - (14 works)
Web  -  Facebook

Japanese painter Hajime Sorayama found fame in the 80s with skillfully executed, highly fetishized airbrushed portraits of sexy female forms. His "objets de fetish" quickly found their way into American men's magazines Playboy & Penthouse, from there he went on to illustrate movie posters, album covers & other ads for various international brands.

Some of Sorayama's art is cringe inducingly sexist, but his images are so seductive, so technically masterful that he draws the viewer into his world. There is love &/or passion in his art. He lovingly objectifies women, he passionately fetishizes them & the results are fantastic guilty pleasures.

ART: Tadanori Yokoo (横尾 忠則) - Groovy Graphics Master

While I usually try to focus on contemporary Asian art it's always hep to pay tribute to some of the masters, the giants who have made waves so massive the ripples are still being felt today.

Tadanori Yokoo, born in Nishiwaki, Japan, in 1936, is one of Japan's most successful & influential graphic designers & artists. He began his career as a stage designer for avant garde theatre in Tokyo & was close friends with Ken Takakura

TOP 8: Asian TED Talks

Yellowmenace reveals the 8 best Asian TED Talks

A doctor, engineer, computer musician, actor, model, aid worker, internet guru & artist, I gathered the most interesting talks from various fields to entertain & educate.
I love TED Talks. I discovered the site in 2007 & it has been blowing my mind ever since. While this may be a slight detour from my usual posts, I wanted to share some of the interesting Asians who are trying to make a big different in our world.
ZeroN - Jinha Lee and Rehmi Post
TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, but it wasn't until 2001, when media entrepreneur Chris Anderson took control from founder Richard Saul Wurman that TED started to become the beacon of idea sharing it is today.

ART INTERVIEW: Tony Stella - Essential Asian Flim Posters

Tony Stella - Illustrator - Italian

Stella's illustrations are passionate & personal, capturing memory triggering cinematic moments that leave you longing to review these classic films. Although, he creates art for a variety of films, I've selected 20 of my favorite Asian movie posters (of course).
"Stella’s seemingly effortless pen & ink sketches, his washes of watercolor & his brush-stroke lettering hark to back to an earlier age."
        - Adrian Curry of Mubi Notebook
Tony Stella - http://antoniostella.tumblr.com/

When I first discovered Tony's expressive hand painted film posters on Tumblr, I instantly became a fan. I had to see more of his unique work, luckily his very active Tumblr blog contains a huge collection of illustrated movie posters. He was also kind enough to grant me an interview & I really appreciate him responding with such thoughtful recollections of his process & past.

Yellowmenace: What’s your approach when creating a new poster?

Tony Stella: Usually, I have seen the movie many times before I start working on a poster. Most of the time, the design is directly triggered by a scene or a still image that jumps out while I watch the film or that left an impression on me. I am an avid collector of film soundtracks, so I often listen to the score while working - it creates the atmosphere & gets me into the right mood.

VID: Yuki Togashi (富樫勇樹) is ALMOST in the NBA!

Yuki Togashi (富樫勇樹) is ALMOST in the NBA!

Japanese point guard, Yuki Togashi (167cm) impressed fans & coaches by playing big for the Dallas Mavericks summer league team, but he didn't quite make the cut.
Well, he didn't, then he did, then he didn't.

Togashi was signed to the Mavs on Oct 15 & then waived on Oct 21 :( He did not get to play in a preseason game.
I don't think we've seen the last of him, tho. The Mavs will most likely sign him to their D-league team, Texas Legends & call him up if their guards get injured or don't perform up to expectation.

There are a growing number of artist/models displaying their own sense of style to the world along with many female artists continually painting "selfies". If the 70s, 80s & 90s were about pop-psychology & searching inward to find oneself, then the start of this millennium seems to be expressing outward in hopes of receiving an echo of self.
