HAIKU Art Review: Hiroyuki Matsuura (松浦 浩之)
Giant plastic toys

"I create my work with the belief that Manga is a representative expression of Japanese art following in the wake of Ukiyo-e."His solo exhibition "Super Acrylic Skin" held at Tokyo Gallery in 2005 marked his career shift to being an artist. Since then, Matsuura has been expanding his practice to work in a variety of formats - painting, sculpture and prints - both in Japan and abroad.
Fujin and Raijin Summon The King Dragon (風神雷神龍王召喚図)
This is one of his most popular works. The large size is impressive & it really shows off his skill with shadows.
The anime influence is obvious, so at first glance his work seems simple & flat, but if the viewer continues to examine the work deftly executed shadows & highlights emerge.
It's safe to say Hiroyuki Matsuura is part of the Superflat movement founded by Japanese postmod darling Takashi Murakami.
The colors are so lush, they're like a big warm blanket in a tiny cottage nestled in the woods.Got me thinking, Strawberry Quick.
He's very active on Facebook & posts many 'in progress' photos & other goodies.

Absolutely love the concise use of light & shadow in this work.
His sculpture has the same effect as his paintings, they seem very simple & plastic, but then the details emerge on closer inspection & you can see how the light plays off of the shapes.
But are the giant toy sculptures & simple anime style paintings too much like Takashi Murakami?
So, which piece is your favorite?
