Last weekend I caught a unique exhibit in Central World mall Bangkok. "Color Me Bear" is a group show featuring some of Thailand's greatest artists along with young up-&-comers all presenting paintings with accompanying custom versions of Medicom Toys' signature Be@rBrick figures. The event was expertly organized by Vinylnation Store, with a wide diversity of artists, thoughtful promotion, presentation & display which isn't easy in the middle of a shopping mall.
Color Me Bear 2018 was such a fun, inventive & original exhibit. I loved everything about it.
1. I loved that is was in the middle of a mall in downtown Bangkok, exposing art to people who would never think about visiting a gallery.
2. I loved the diversity of Thai artists Vinylnation Store gathered for the show, young up&comers with serious icons of Thai art like Suwatchai TubTim, Prateep Kochabua & Nipon Jungkina & of course the hip pop artists you would expect to be in an exhibit like this, Benzilla, ASIN, Aof Smith...

3. I loved the use of Be@rBrick toys which are incredibly popular, fun & inviting. The dolls added an extra element, seeing how each artist translated their style onto the same bear figure. Also it helped make the event more commercial, promotable & profitable.
4. I loved the display & spacing. It was open with just black metal frames supporting the paintings & dolls. All passersby could see in & it created an open, welcoming space. There was enough breathing room between pieces so viewers could look around & take photos.
