Living in Thailand, I have been able to witness first hand the heartfelt grief & outpouring of remembrances for the beloved Rama IX. Many Thais have turned to art to express their gratitude & respect for the King's lifetime of service for his country. I've assembled my favorite 38 artworks from 23 Thai & international, professional & student artists.

UPDATE: For the cremation ceremony of Rama IX I've created a second art collection celebrating his life & love of Thailand > Celebrating the life of Rama IX The Great

For seven decades, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was Thailand’s guiding light. The monarch, regarded far & wide as Father to the nation. His fortitude & devotion to human development were an inspiration to all. Regardless of the differences & disparities across Thai society, His Majesty was a solitary constant, a beacon of hope for Thais rich & poor, young & old, rural farmers & urban residents alike. Having reigned since 9 June 1946, he was, at the time of his death, the world's longest-serving head of state & the longest-reigning monarch in Thai history.

In this bizarro fire monkey year we have experienced the loss of so many inspirational public figures, Bowie, Prince, Cohen & Por Tridsadee to name a few. It's amazing how many people have turned to art as a means to process their emotions. I think it's because you give yourself over to concentrated focus on the subject for a long period of time, like an active meditation. The action is key & so is the creation, at the end you have brought something into this world.

We will all die & it's difficult to predict when or where it will happen, but art gives us a small amount of control, to preserve a memory of our loved ones, icons & inspirations. A tangible way to shout into the inescapable void, "You can't take THIS away from me!"
