There's been a lot of basketball over the last 2 months & with the NBA Finals about the begin I wanted to present a different perspective through the incredible work of Korean illustrator, CEO & instructor, MinSuk Kim (김민석).
Kim MinSuk aka Kwang33 is one of the leading sports illustrators in Korea. He designs for several sports organizations, magazines & international clients. He has worked 10 years as the lead designer for the Korean magazine, "Rookie" which covers the NBA. He illustrates for the Korean Basketball League as well as Jumpball magazine which covers the KBL. He shares many of his designs on his Facebook page NBA Illustration.
In this post, I want emphasize that basketball is so much more than the NBA. Women's basketball, for example gets little to no media attention. Somehow the NBA has managed to keep the WNBA alive, although I suspect it's heavily subsidized by NBA team they share a city with. Korea also has professional men's & women's leagues.
The women's league is all Korean, but the men's league has foreign players, usually from the US. Only 2 foreign players per team are allowed to play on the court at a time, quarters are only 10 minutes long & there are only 10 teams in the league.
Wheelchair basketball further expands the definition of the game. This sport more than most others is about constantly improving your condition to overcome obstacles because you must find ways around your opponent, not through them.
It's really cool that Minsuk had a chance to celebrate these athletes with his art.
