David Bull has been in Tokyo since before Jed was born, having gone there to learn what he could about the craft of traditional woodblock printmaking & has been making his living at it for nearly 25 years now. For most of that time, he worked as a solo craftsman (carving, printing, self-publishing), but for the past couple of years has been working with younger people to train them in the techniques, under the umbrella of his Mokuhankan publishing venture.

curated by YellowMenace (20 images)
*UPDATED: Nov 2017

With minimal as the mantra of the 2010s, Craig Drake's art has come along at just the right moment. He balances simplicity with enough well placed detail & beloved pop subject matter to make his work irresistible.

This post focuses on Asian movie, anime & comic pop icons. This isn't the first time I've featured Craig's art & I can guarantee you it won't be the last.

Craig recently had his second solo show at Hero Complex Gallery. The links to purchase prints below all lead to the Hero Complex Store. (Art without links has already sold out)

ART: Gordon Cheung - Toxic Corporate Cowboys

Gordon Cheung - (30 works)
Web  -  Facebook  -  Twitter

At first glance, Gordon Cheung's collaged paintings may look like an art student experimenting with Photoshop filters for the first time. The posterization, find edges, & solarized effects are actually achieved via a complex process of actual layering, which for Cheung always begins with the stock listings from newspapers as his base.

ART INTERVIEW: Tony Stella - Essential Asian Flim Posters

Tony Stella - Illustrator - Italian

Stella's illustrations are passionate & personal, capturing memory triggering cinematic moments that leave you longing to review these classic films. Although, he creates art for a variety of films, I've selected 20 of my favorite Asian movie posters (of course).
"Stella’s seemingly effortless pen & ink sketches, his washes of watercolor & his brush-stroke lettering hark to back to an earlier age."
        - Adrian Curry of Mubi Notebook
Tony Stella - http://antoniostella.tumblr.com/

When I first discovered Tony's expressive hand painted film posters on Tumblr, I instantly became a fan. I had to see more of his unique work, luckily his very active Tumblr blog contains a huge collection of illustrated movie posters. He was also kind enough to grant me an interview & I really appreciate him responding with such thoughtful recollections of his process & past.

Yellowmenace: What’s your approach when creating a new poster?

Tony Stella: Usually, I have seen the movie many times before I start working on a poster. Most of the time, the design is directly triggered by a scene or a still image that jumps out while I watch the film or that left an impression on me. I am an avid collector of film soundtracks, so I often listen to the score while working - it creates the atmosphere & gets me into the right mood.

Sean Danconia has built a seductive visual universe by marrying cult-cinema & animation to a wild pop-art aesthetic. Born in Montreal, Canada, Danconia was named after another “Sean”-Connery—by his mother, an intrepid James Bond fan. This early “Bondian” bullet would fire itself throughout his life and creative pursuits.

Everything begins with BJ's photography, in the frozen instant that will never return; and ends in Richeille's creative direction, in her slow, reflective, patient composition.
BJ moved to NYC 1999 and assisted Richard Avedon, Mary Ellen Mark, Annie Leibovitz and studied under Eugene Richards and Arnold Newman. Since 2001, he has set out on his own and has shot for numerous magazines and advertising clients as well as continued to mature in his personal work.
Richeille worked as an art director and designer within the fashion industry, working for a large umbrella company responsible for visually communicating new season looks on all graphic works and brands like Calvin Klein, Diesel, DKNY and various other independent fashion labels.
