Andrew Archer is the creative force behind Edo Ball, envisioning NBA players celebrated in the style of ancient Japanese woodblock prints called, ukiyo-e. A freelance illustrator from New Zealand, currently located in Melbourne, Australia with a passion for basketball. The prototypes for Edo Ball were "The Rock & The Ghost" prints back in 2013. Since then, the series has expanded to 32 original prints over 3 seasons which has been compiled into a beautiful artbook "Edo Ball: The Art of Basketball" available at the Edo Ball online store, along with all the prints below just click the images to purchase prints.
Andrew's appreciation for & in depth study of classical ukiyo-e is evident in his work. This is not cultural appropriation, but skillful execution rooted in extensive research & deep understanding of both basketball & woodblock printing. Having lived & traveled around Asia for 3 years, Asian art is part of his life just like basketball & both are subjects anyone, of any race, religion or persuasion can pursue with zeal. As a result of his ongoing passion project, he has been commissioned by Chinese pop stars, the NBA, Nike, Audi, etc to create posters, animation, product designs & more.
I've been following Andrew's career for over 5 years now, check out this 2014 post, "AZN Style" to see more of his older work.
"I’m greatly inspired by surrealism, juxtapositions & sublime narratives but more specifically wood block prints, edo period art, cartoons, ideograms, characterization, travel & Asia. Through my work I’ve been lucky enough to work within a range of super cool mediums including editorials, advertising, web, moving picture, storyboards & more."

"I moved to Asia in my mid twenties for 3 years. I played pick up basketball on rooftop's in Hong Kong, under bridges in Bangkok & on cracked courts in the middle of Cambodia. Often I couldn't speak a word of the local language but the people always welcomed me to the game. It was like family no matter where you went."
