The first episode focuses on mine manager, Dahai (Jiang Wu) who takes brutal revenge on a corrupt village chief & all those around him. This is based on Hu Wenhai (胡文海) who, with a friend killed 14 people with a rifle & an ax.

On June 19, 1999 in the town of Wujinshan (Shanxi Province), Hu Wenhai, was quarreling with two fellow villagers when they attacked & wounded him with a knife. As revenge, Hu Wenhai and Liu Haiwang, killed village cadre Hu Gensheng, who Wenhai claimed to have masterminded the incident, and 13 innocent people he considered his personal enemies with a hunting rifle and ax, on October 26, 2001. The local court sentenced both men to death.

Mine manager turned brutal vigilante, Dahai is played by Jiang Wu (姜武) the younger brother of celebrated actor, writer, director Jiang Wen (姜文) best known for Devils on the Doorstep & Gone with the Bullets.
Jiang Wu (姜武) has appeared in such films as Wu Xia & To Live.

Internationally acclaimed Chinese master Jia Zhangke won Best Screenplay for A Touch of Sin at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. The English title is a reference to King Hu's 1971 action epic A Touch of Zen, one of the most influential wu xia films.
