Probably
MJ's most famous work, I came across this on Deviant Art around 2009 & I was an instant fan. The level of intricate detail draws ur eye & holds ur gaze as U continue to examine the figure.
I love the abstraction & accent of color in the hand capturing motion or another angle, giving a subtle 'shout out' back at Picasso & Cubism.
This is one of
MJ's more recent works & I wonder if Ms. Aoki has seen this & if so, what was her reaction.
We've heard countless lovers, poets & songwriters describe the feeling of being lost or absorbed by physical beauty. What
MJ does so successfully is make this notion concrete via the painstaking & thoughtful detail laid upon these women's bodies. We are invited to look, look for a long time, & look closely.
Lots more drawings below!
The whimsical shapes & patterns take the observer beyond the outward beauty of the face & skin hinting at the models' personality, emotions, past, aspirations, etc.
In the
Artist Profile of
Hirata Yodom, I talked about the current trend of extreme distortion &/or mutilation of the female form in much of Asian art. (I believe the work of
Sintaro Kago is one of the major influences on this trend.)
MJ contrasts this idea by enhancing the women (usually) in his portraits creating a more soulful & positive depiction of people.
His restrained yet playful use of color & pattern often contradict the serious expressions of the models offering a more hopeful experience than B&W drawing.
I can envision
Greno being commissioned by ad agencies & major brands to create these types of portraits for major celebrities because of the joyful humanistic engagement he instills in his art.
What's ur fav piece by Greno (aka)
Minjae Lee? & why?
